Galungan is the most important holiday symbolizing the victory of Virtue (Dharma) upon Evil (Adharma). Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremony that is celebrated by all Balinese. The holiday is specialized by the fitting of 'penjor', a tall bamboo pole splendidly decorated with woven young coconut leaves, fruit, cakes and flowers, on the right side of every house entrance. People are attired in their finest clothes and jewels this day.

Kuningan is the second most important day of the Balinese Hindu calendar. The Balinese attend religious services and make offerings to the gods. At the holy spring temple Tirta Empul, at Tampaksiring, people partake in a ritual purification, bathing in the spring.

From 3-7 October, the creative hub of Bali will present their most eclectic event as more than one hundred of the world's liveliest, most diverse and engaging writes converge in Ubud from dozens of countries.

The Festival theme is This Earth of Mankind: Bumi Manusia, taken from the title of a work by one of Indonesia's greatest contemporary writers Pramoedya Ananta Toer. This Earth of Mankind is the first book in Pramoedya's historical fiction series called The Buru Quartet, first published in 1980. The story is set at the end of the Dutch colonial rule and was written while Pramoedya was a political prisoner on the island prison of Buru in eastern Indonesia.

In May, the second Bali Emerging Writers Festival (BEWF) will offer a more diverse program with speakers from varying backgrounds. The focus will no longer be on poems and novels alone, but also on social activism, featuring inspirational and visual authors, award-winning poet and documentary film maker, video art creator, graphic designer, internet literacy activist and photo journalist. BEWF will also feature the first ever Community Day, during which idea-driven, youth-backed organizations will share their dreams and passions. Moreover, there will be movie screenings featuring the works of the island's best young film makers as well as three consecutive nights of rocking music and theatrical performances.
