Nyepi, or Silence Day

Unlike other New Year celebrations that are marked with late-night carousing and high-spirited revelry, the Balinese New Year, called Nyepi, is commemorated with total silence. Locals use the holiday as a time of prayer and meditation, and all of the island’s routine activities come to a complete halt so that everyone may focus on the spirit of the day. Visitors lucky enough to be in town for the 17th March feast day will be struck by the serene mood that overtakes the normally bustling archipelago.
