After a long tour in British theatres and on international stages, the musical that, for 21 years, held the attention of Broadway, inspiring the prize-winning film Chicago by Rob Marshall with Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renée Zellweger, returns to London. In the prohibitionist Chicago of the Twenties, all gangsters and jazz, the noir adventure of Velma and Roxie, two assassins contending for the title of Star of the Nightclubs. The duel continues in prison with no-holds barred, escalating in a crescendo of song and dance. Between the two protagonists - played by Josephina Gabrielle and Sarah Soetaert - there’s the brilliant lawyer Billy Flynn, played by Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr, while Ruthie Henshall plays the role of the corrupt guard Mama Matron. Cynicism and naivety, scoops built on lies, sequins and solitude hold sway in a world that, as Bill says, “is a big Circus where the important thing is to amaze the jury.” Velma and Roxie fall and get back up, each in turn, just to fall again. But something unites them - the desire to dance along to numbers such as All That Jazz, Hot Honey Rag, Razzle Dazzle.
