The cyclic calendar that marks religious festivities in Bali sees one of the most important day in Galungan, a special 10-day celebration - happening every 210 days - commemorating good triumphing over evil. The legend behind Galungan tells the story of an evil giant, rivers of blood and a year-long battle between the Gods.
During Galungan, spirits of the Gods return to earth and they are welcomed by Balinese people with rituals and feasts as well as offerings and prayers take place at family shrines and village temples.
Bamboo poles, also named “penjor”, are made in order to decorate the entrance to the family house and, in this way, visitors can enjoy the dazzling festive atmosphere of the island along the streets.
