The intense melodies of Gaetano Donizetti and the exceptional conductor’s wand of Riccardo Chailly meet the contemporary view of Davide Livermore in a great title from the repertoire of the 1800s. After the collaborations with Gabriele Salvatores and Mario Martone, La Scala furthers its important work with top directors on the National scene. Don Pasquale returns to the Piermarini in a production by one of the most appreciated Italian artists on the stages of the world. Lightness and profound humanity find a perfect blend in a work that, according to tradition, Donizetti composed in only 11 days for the Théâtre-Italien of Paris. The greedy and vain Don Pasquale, his young nephew Ernesto, Doctor Malatesta, the astute and exuberant Norina - all reminiscent of the Commedia dell’Arte - in a story that looks at love and ageing with touches of tragicomedy. Among the opera’s strong points, its relentless pace with a cavalcade of arias, dances and choral numbers, but also its attention to the inner lives and, at the same time, theatricality, of its characters. Innovation and respect for musicality coexist in a show that, along with the baritone talent of Ambrogio Maestri, brings the best of the new generation of the Belcanto to the stage with performers like René Barbera, Mattia Olivieri and Rosa Feola, already celebrated for last season’s Gazza Ladra directed by Chailly.
