At the Chiostri di Sant’Eustorgio, the Grace of Perugino

After The Adoration of the Magi by Albrecht Dürer, comes another work by a giant of the Renaissance as the masterpiece of Milan 2017. The Adoration of the Shepherds by Perugino, admirable piece which is a reflection of the artistic maturity of its author and part of the great Polittico di Sant’Agostino, a structure over eight metres and originally composed of thirty tablets. The painting, which was probably at the center of the facade of the altar-piece, represents all the fundamental traits of the style of Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, universally known as “il Perugino” and as the master of Raphael. Within it can be seen the light and monumental quality borrowed from Piero della Francesca, the refined linearity and the adhesion to nature of Andrea Verrocchio, the formal purity, the balance of composition and the sweetness of the figures which would influence the work of artists from Urbino. Over time, there have been numerous attempts to reconfigure the ancient polyptych, whose parts are, today, divided between Perugia (the Church of San Pietro and the Pinacoteca Nazionale dell’Umbria), the United States and France. Within the suggestive spaces of Sant’Eustorgio the exhibition re-evokes the original altar-piece, alluding to the architectural structure of the Church of Saint Augustine in Perugia, for which the altar-piece was created.
