In 1505, Albrecht Dürer, the refined artist from Nuremburg with curly blonde hair, a slim physique and elegant manners, known and admired throughout Europe, especially for his engravings, reached Venice on his second voyage in Italy. 500 years later, the Master that was part of the height of the German Renaissance returns to the country that inspired him and, at the Palazzo Reale, he dialogues with some of his most important Italian contemporaries, as well as others from the other side of the Alps. Around 130 masterpieces, at the centre of the exhibition Dürer e il Rinascimento tra Germania e Italia, retrace the high points of the Wiedererwachung in its highest moment, as well as highlighting the fascinating artistic relationship between Northern and Southern Europe and taking an in-depth look at various themes, including the relationship with Dürer and his patrons, the vision of nature and art between Classicism and Anti-Classicism, Dürer’s personal life and his ambitions. Masterpieces of painting, graphics, design, realised by masters and divided into six thematic sections, are on display next to works by illustrious artists, from the Germans Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung to the great Italian painters and graphic artists, from Giorgione to Leonardo da Vinci, from Giovanni Bellini to Lorenzo Lotto. The relationship with Venice and the artistic techniques adopted by the painter in Italy is looked at, along with a look at Dürer the man, his innovations in the field of engraving, the theme of Classicism and its alternatives. A reflection on the aesthetic system dominant during the golden century in which the artist lived - a period illuminated by the extraordinary spread of new philosophical ideas - wraps up the itinerary dedicated, for the first time in Milan, to the masterpieces of the Master of Nuremberg and the times in which he lived.
