Amidst the Neo-Gothic architecture of the Two Temple Place, jazz replays its own history, detailing its encounters with painting, textiles, ceramics and cartoons, while celebrating the impact of its rhythms on art and British society in general. Rhythm & Reaction: The Age of Jazz is a voyage through the post-war nightclubs and dance-halls, with the wild moves of the lively dancers depicted by William Roberts and Frank Dobson, the paintings of Edward Burra, and the notes and paintings of artists united by their common passion for Jazz music. Working its way into society until it actually brought about profound changes, after it reached the public following the First World War, jazz got into homes, thanks also to the designs on textiles and ceramics by Carlton Ware, Clarice Cliff. It was also through American groups like the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and the Southern Syncopated Orchestra that the British had their first chance of hearing the music performed live. The exhibition at the Two Temple Place, curated by Catherine Tackley, is a voyage through music, a story about the impact of musical notes on the aesthetic of art.
