Which elements in real life penetrate the works of art during the making of a real life portrait and how do gestures, the face and the body influence the creative process? The Royal Academy of Arts hosts From Life, a journey about live drawing techniques, held at both the Sackler Wing of Galleries and Tennant Gallery, starting with XVIII Century works from the museum’s collection. Next to paintings of masters like Johann Zoffany, are works by contemporary artists, from Jeremy Deller to Jenny Saville, who continue to practice live drawing techniques. Through the use of new technologies, some artists have observed and represented themselves and the world around them, but through virtual reality and specific platforms they have also created new works of Art specifically for the exhibition. The exhibition includes the 3D representation of a neoclassical painting by Yinka Shonibare and a metal sculpture realised by Jonathan Yeo and Tilt Brush, the Google virtual panel for drawing in 3D by simply moving your hands. In 2018, during the 250-year-celebration of the Royal Academy, in the historical Life Room, one will be able to participate in free live drawing lessons.
