A vortex of signs that capture the eye and fix it on the surface of the canvas: that’s how the works of Agostino Ferrari are, protagonist of Italian art for over half a century. The Museo del Novecento pays homage to the maestro from Milan for his 80th birthday with a full anthological exhibition which highlights the wealth and coherence of his ceaseless work. Line, form, space and colour are the basic elements around which Ferrari creates his remarkably original works. Close to Lucio Fontana, Agostino Bonalumi, Dadamaino, he made his first steps on the art scene in the climate of renewal of the early ‘60s: he shared the need to “save painting” with the young innovators around him, bringing the work pure and primitive gestures, which still seemed to be projected towards the future. Thus was born his “poetry of signs” which reduces the act of painting to “A-Significant” type of graphics, reminiscent of the pages of a newspaper - the ferment of a restless and radical era fused with an intense artistic sensibility, the public encountering the private. All of this can be witnessed in the itinerary at Palazzo dell’Arengario, which goes all the way up to the latest works of the artist, including the very recent Prosegni etched out in volcanic sand and a never-before-seen work created specifically for the event. Studies and original notes allow visitors to emerge themselves in the methods and creative processes of the master, as well.
