At the GAM, Boldini and the Ladies of the Belle Époque

Elegant, intense, luminous - the women of Giovanni Boldini, protagonists of a not-to-be-missed event at the GAM. From the Museum of Ferrara dedicated to the painter of the Belle Époque, a selection of paintings, pastels and drawings, for a total of 30 works - a precious taste of the highly personalised and refined style that, in the first two decades of the 1900s, made Boldini the most sought-after portraitist of Italian and European high society. Next to these exceptional loaned works, are the works of Paul Helleu, friend and artistic colleague of the master from Ferrara, who took part in those adventures in the fabulous Paris of the start of the last century. Close-up, the creation of an original language which brought about a new kind of portrait. Not just high-fashion clothing, sinuous silhouettes and splendid incarnations - the “fragile icons” of Boldini flaunt the fleeting charm of a new epoch. With a remarkably acute eye and brush, the painter manages to transfer to the canvas all the volatile subtleties of ethereal women, sophisticated and provocative, whose faces seem to carry the imprinted memories of a dream.
