Kimsooja and the Poetry of Light at the Chiostri di Sant’Eustorgio

The ancient and stunning environments of the Chiostri di Sant’Eustorgio open to contemporary aesthetics with the refined sensibilities of Kimsooja. Korean by birth, New Yorker by choice, the artists transports visitors on an intense interior voyage in a surprising exploration of space. The stars of the work are the Portinari Chapel and the two Solariane Chapels, dating back to the second half of the 1400s, embellished by priceless frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa and Daniele Crespi which allude to Heaven and the Divine Light. The work of Kimsooja filters, through a special material, the light that enters the Chapels, reflecting the rays within through devices conceived of by the artist. The spectrum of colours varies with the movement of the sun, giving life to a different perception of the space at every hour of the day. The result is a remarkable experience, both physical and spiritual, which obliterates the confines between past and present. Just enter the Chapels and “breathe in” the atmosphere - To Breathe is the title of the work - to be overtaken by a world of contemplation and experience the revelation of the “third heaven” described by Dante in The Divine Comedy, particularly enthralling in the light of sunset.
