Turning our attention to the debates that were taking place during the First Sino-Japanese War, one of the most disruptive conflicts in the history of the Far East, helps chart a brighter course for the future. In this spirit, Tsinghua University Art Museum is hosting an exhibition of calligraphy works by great Chinese figures of the time, such as politician Li Hongzhang, General Ding Ruchang, and businessman Zhang Jian. Documents and writings that highlight the debates and dilemmas within the élite in the Qing era, the heroic struggles of the military apparatus, and the reformist awakening spurred by the defeat of the war. Other writings document the expansionist ambitions of some of the leading figures of the Japanese invasion forces, serving as poignant reminders of this tragic historical event. An exhibition that intends to treasure the lessons taught by history.
