Hassan Khan, Composition for a Public Park
#Art

As the title clearly indicates, the musical work by Egyptian artist Hassan Khan was specifically created for a public park. Originally commissioned for the Parc de Belleville in Paris, as part of the All-Night Festivities of 2013, it was successively displayed at the 57th Venice Biennial of 2017, where it won the Leone d’Argento and was, then, purchased by the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai. Until the month of June in 2020, walking through the Waterfront Sculpture Park in Al Jaddaf, it will be possible to admire this work in all its beauty and complexity. Composition for a Public Park is structured in three simultaneous movements, each with a different title, Stasis and Majesty, The Rotating Jewel, No Political Romanticism. At the centre of each movement is a spoken libretto, written by the artist and presented here in three languages - Arabic, Urdu and English. Each movement has a different duration so that, despite the fact that the pieces are in a loop, they are not stuck in some fixed, static repetition. The relation between each movement and the next changes continually, allowing the pieces to breath and live, offering spectators the possibility of listening numerous times without ever having the same experience twice.
