The Sharjah Art Museum hosts a long-term exhibition with a selection of important works from the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation. Modernist paintings and sculpture that cover a century of artistic production in the Arab region and the Arab world, starting at the end of the XIX Century and going through the XX Century. There are works on display from noted modernist artists including, among others, Faiq Hassan and Kadhim Hayder, Ibrahim El-Salahi and Hassan Sharif, one of the Arab Emirate’s foremost artists. There are also many works from women who left their mark on art history and thought in the Middle East, such as Inji Efflatoun, from the surrealist group Art et Liberté in Cairo, the painter and sculptor Saloua Raouda Choucair, as well as Samia Halaby. And there is no lack of recent acquisitions, such as the 1968 work by Dia Azzawi, A Wolf Howls: Memories of a Poet, a painting based on the poem Hassan Al Shammus by Muzaffar Al Nawab, one of the most important Iraqi poets of the last century. The exhibition aims at making these works more accessible to scholars, artists, curators and mere enthusiasts, to encourage a greater understanding of the history of art produced in the region and this is among the most compelling reasons behind the fact that the exhibition will run an impressive five years.
