It was the project of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava which captured the imagination of the National Media Council of the United Arab Emirates after a design contest that lasted seven months, involving some of the most important architecture studios of the world, thus receiving the commission for the United Arab Emirates Pavilion at the Dubai World Expo 2020. “The final design will be a symbol of the audacious and pioneering spirit of the United Arab Emirates, mirrored by what is destined to be the most inclusive and global Expo in history,” said Calatrava, regarding the sense of his design, for which he chose the form of a falcon in flight, one of the nation’s symbols, a symbol capable of containing, in harmonious balance, the past and future of the Nation. The structure represents the very heart of the exposition area and will measure approximately 15.000 square metres, including numerous functional and recreative areas. It was designed to meet the highest standards of sustainable building, also thanks to the retractable wings on the roof which can be moved hydraulically, allowing for more daylight to enter. It is estimated that the pavilion will be visited by around 25 million people from over 180 countries who are expected to take part in the Expo from October 2021 to March 2022.
