One of the first stone sculptures of Mona Saudi, Mother / Earth, is from 1965, when the artist was only twenty years old. The theme, that of belonging to Mother / Earth, is one that she came back to often throughout her career, not only in her sculptural works but also in paintings and drawings, because of her profound sentiments regarding the subject. The artist, born in Amman in 1945, studied sculpture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the city in which one of her monumental works was placed to grace the entrance of the Institute of the Arab World. She collects stones and she has great respect for them, they speak to her in a special way as she once said, "Every stone, every form, has a different feel, a different light". For this exhibition at the XVA Gallery, however, she has decided to display works on paper which, while still possessing a distinct sculptural quality, are not plans or sketches of her sculpture, because none of her three-dimensional works are based on sketches. She has always loved poetry and some of the works in this exhibition are inspired by poets such as Adonis, Mahmoud Darwish, Saint-John Perse and the Città Invisibili by writer Italo Calvino, authors who, quite like her, once declared, "…they express an overall poetic dimension that glorifies Mother-Earth, the vibrations of life and the mystery of creation".
