Time, Space and Light in Hiroshi Sugimoto's Sights

Time, Space and Light in Hiroshi Sugimoto's Sights
#Exhibitions

Through his meticulous, thought-provoking and quietly subversive images, his playful yet philosophical inquiry, Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has revolutionized our understanding of time and photography's ability to invent and document. There will also be lesser-known works, which reveal the artist's interest in the history of photography, as well as in mathematics and optical sciences, within the exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine expected from 11 October to 7 January at the Hayward Gallery. Sometimes using a large format wooden camera and mixing the chemicals of his darkroom, Sugimoto has expanded and rearranged the concepts of time, space and light, exploring ideas and practices of 19th century photography. Although he is best known as a photographer, Sugimoto has recently added architecture, sculpture and scenography to his multidisciplinary practice.
