Who would have ever imagined that one of the most coveted objects of recent decades was born in 1984 on a flight from Paris to London? The English actress Jane Birkin, sitting near Jean-Louis Dumas, President of Hermès, lamented how she simply couldn’t find a bag which was suited to her needs as a young mother. Thus was born a spacious rectangular versatile bag which even had a special place for a baby bottle. The celebrated Birkin is just one of a number of accessories which have charmed and seduced millions - and not just women. This historic bag is featured in Bags: Inside Out - at the Victoria & Albert Museum - a journey through style, among boxes, backpacks and Louis Vuitton luggage, that retraces the history of luxury handicrafts and the design of the perfect accessory. Another gem on display? The dispatch box owned by Winston Churchill, designed by John Peck & Son, created in London in 1921.
