Bruno Liljefors, Winter Hare, 1908, Private Collection

Bruno Liljefors was an important figure in the Scandinavian art scene of the late 19th century. After two exhibitions devoted to the Swedish painters Carl Larsson (2014) and Anders Zorn (2017), the Petit Palais pays tribute to Liljefors with the last chapter of its programme focusing on the Swedish trio known as “ABC ”, a combination of the initials of their names. This exhibition presents a group of around a hundred works, including paintings, drawings and photographs from the collections of Swedish museums such as the National Museum in Stockholm, the Thiel Gallery and the Gothenburg Museum, as well as numerous private collections. Liljefors immortalized actual families of foxes lurking in the woods or hares running through the snow, but also ospreys perched on the peaks and maritime pines, eider ducks flying over the icy waters of the archipelago and capercaillies performing their wedding parade in the forests. In Liljefors' universe, animals, plants, insects and birds were all part of a larger whole, each with a specific role to play.
