Abstract Art from a New Perspective

Abstract Art from a New Perspective
#Exhibitions

Explore the possibility of rewriting the history of abstract art during the XX Century in the West with some unprecedented incursions into the XXI Century - this is the aim of the collective at the West Bund Museum Project. While most of the exhibitions on abstract art have downplayed the fundamental role of female artists in the development of this language during the modern age, Women in Abstraction gathers 35 artists and 90 works from the Collection of the Centre Pompidou of Paris, presenting, for the first time in an organic and systematic manner, the Chinese public with a history parallel to the widely-accepted narrative. The curatorship of Christine Macel offers an original reconfiguration of the collection of the Centre Pompidou in which Sonia Delaunay-Terk is placed next to Bridget Riley, Magdalena Abakanowicz and Ann Veronica Janssens, among others. The works on display range from painting to cinema, from sculpture to photograpy, but also installations, and these are presented in a chronological itinerary, from the 1800s to our times, highlighting both singular sensibilities as well as an overall tendency towards innovation, inherent to women.
