The Nocturnal Visions of Chen Wei

The Nocturnal Visions of Chen Wei
#Exhibitions

"Good Night" - as this exhibition is entitled - is a phrase that artist Chen Wei seems to say with reluctance, given his habit of also working at night, during those hours which, being less hectic, less frenetic compared with the daytime, offer a better chance at reflection and creation. The works on display are an homage to the attention of Chen Wei regarding the urban reality which, captured during night hours, better reveals its human and spatial geography. The results are photos meticulously elaborated in the studio, as seen in the series New City and New Buildings, in which the real dimension is often flanked by the ideal in order to highlight the paradoxes and voids of our times, especially when talking about big city life. The blinding luminosity of mirrors and coins coexist with black shadows which cover the few human figures present in the photos and with phosphorescent colours which, at times, appear out of focus, clouded like memories sedimented in the mind, rather than views of real landscapes.
