Abandon all hope, you who cross the threshold of the Capsule Gallery in Shanghai. Do not look for any reference to the known world, it would be useless. Cai Zebin enjoys with an ironic touch making you lose all orientation in time and space. Woe betide anyone who even tries to find a correspondence with reality in the faces that Cai sketches by merging facial expressions with other parts of the body or in the almost anthropomorphized daily scenes. Despite all this, Cai Zebin is strongly indebted to tradition. The artist takes up classic works created by the great Masters, a way to study the examples closely and to appropriate them along the lines of that typical practice of traditional Chinese painting; "learning from the ancients". In the fragments of reality captured in the paintings, the artist hides a surreal, fantastic vision. The title of the exhibition, The 23rd Parallel North, refers to the Shantou region where the artist lives and works. The works on display are an exploration of life in his hometown at various times from sunset to night.
