A Lengthy Love Story

A Lengthy Love Story
#Exhibitions

Once upon a time, there was romantic love. And, fortunately, it still exists. But the exhibition at the SCoP Shanghai, reminds us that it wasn’t always that way - there was a time in China where love, meant as a personal experience and a perfectly natural human impulse, was secondary to the comfort of community life. And today? We don’t have to look far to see multiple examples of this noble sentiment on the streets of Shanghai. But is this true love? Summer of Love offers, as examples to examine, the works of four photographers who have gathered evidence of this emotion in today’s China. The contexts of their studies are the classics - courtship, marriage, friendship and familial love. The works presented offer a look at all the various types of love - it’s discreet expression, handily captured by Liu Heung Shing; the materialistic aspects of matrimony, as witnessed by Olivia Martin-McGuire. Maleonn, meanwhile, leads us over 28.000 kilometres and 54 cities towards beauty, gathering a collection of romantic or simply kind gestures. Coca Dai incessantly depicts wife, Judy Zhu, presenting an intimate reflection on modern femininity, emotivity and the limits of photography, which could never capture the full depth of this emotion. Along with the exhibition, SCoP presents the portraits of the series The One I Love - the point of view of a new generation of aspiring photographers who participated in a general call for artist submissions. SCOP will also continue to collect works connected to love as they are submitted by the public itself!
