“Nest” - the Underwater Sculptures and a New Home for Coral
#BulgariStories

At a depth of just 4 metres in the crystalline waters near the coast of Gili Meno, a tiny island easily reached from Bali, the sculptor and professional underwater photographer Jason deCaires Taylor created Nest, a work of environmental art to raise awareness about the risk of destroying the coral barrier reefs. Intensely committed to spreading the word about the fragility of the marine ecosystem, the sculptor has brought his works to various sea beds around the globe. At Gili Meno, he installed 48 life-size human figures in a circle, an homage to the continuity of time, to the circle of life. And it is the passage of time which modifies the aesthetic of the sculpture and increases the value of the work in regards to its goal - the cement used for the statue is, in fact, pH neutral, designed to help create an artificial barrier reef where coral can grow rapidly. You can get to the statues by swimming from the beach or by using watercrafts available on location.
