For a New Architecture through the Language of Visual Arts
#Exhibitions

Departing from the editorial entitled Steadfastly Lower the Standards in Nonproductive Construction published by the People’s Daily in 1955, taken up again in the collective Steadfastly Raise the Standards in Nonproductive Construction of 2018 which promoted a radical proposal aiming to use new standards regarding Chinese modernisation, industrialisation and urbanisation, the exhibition underway at the Long March Independent Space is another step towards the “practice of the criticism” and not merely the “criticism of the practice”. Curator Evonne Jiawei Yuan has subdivided the exhibition into four large architectural scenarios which include monuments, skyscrapers, town squares and “frontlines”. The artists involved - Chen Wei, Cui Jie, Liu Ren, Liu Wei, Lu Lei, Inga Svala Thorsdottir & Wu Shanzhuan, Joey Xia and Zeng Jiahui - rethink the concepts of productivity and unproductivity in the realm of architecture through a reflection which ranges from the social will and production (monuments), speed and height (skyscrapers), then integration and interaction (town squares), without forgetting about local needs (frontline).
