Four decades of art bearing the signature of Lubaina Himid are on display at the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. The artist who initially studied scenography is now known for her innovative approach to painting and her social commitment. During the 1980s Lubaina Himid was one of the most engaged voices of the British Black Arts Movement and actively contributed to the development of British black arts. On display is a selection of works that challenge dominant historical narratives and explore central themes in the artist's practice, such as the history of slavery and black experiences, gender perspectives and language. The result is a portrait of an artist who has never been afraid to experiment with different media and supports from canvas, to cut-outs, to found objects and to sound installations, as long as she was free to express herself.
