The Golden Mummies of the Ancient Reign of the Pharaohs

The Golden Mummies of the Ancient Reign of the Pharaohs
#Exhibitions

After the huge success in the United States, the exhibition centred around ancient Egypt during the times of the Roman Empire and on its funeral practices in particular, comes to China. Eight spectacular mummies dressed in gold leaf and a series of archeological finds that reconstruct their principal beliefs about life, death, rebirth and the afterlife are presented with the stunning backdrop of the China Millenium Monument. The exhibition looks at the expectations for the world beyond the grave in vogue at the time of the Pharaohs but it also invites visitors to rethink the means behind constructing the identities of individuals, as demonstrated surprisingly by the portraits on display, painted with realistic precision but not without psychological analysis as well. The extraordinary mummies on display are examples of the advanced practices of preservation and the decoration of the body regardless of the presumed transformation of the deceased into a divinity. The vivid colours and the precious materials used for the furnishings and the mummies themselves are synonymous with a hope and trust in life beyond death. A fascinating and poetic journey through one of most beloved yet mysterious civilisations of the ancient world.
