The Spirit of the Times According to Cao Fei

The Spirit of the Times According to Cao Fei
#Art

Cao Fei - three-time participant at the Venice Biennial and personal exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MoMA PS1 of New York and London’s Serpentine Gallery - has been, for decades already, an undisputed star of Video Art, an important and innovative artist in China and abroad. The journey delineated by the works on display - in occasion of this, the most complete exhibition ever organised to date - and the vast array of themes explored, allows for the public to grasp the shades of the work that explores new youthful trends, the evolution of Chinese society but also the outlook of a future which promises to be increasingly mechanised and projected towards the conquest of new dimensions. The central hall of the UCCA is animated by classics, including Cosplayers (2004), in which young people experiment with role play in order to interact with the world, Whose Utopia (2006), project created in a factory and whose protagonists are workers intent on dancing and flaunting their individualism, but there’s also the more recent Asia One (2018) and HX (2019-2020), presented for the first time in China. A voyage among varying visual languages and themes which capture the spirit of our times and look to the future with fresh understanding.
