What direction is the world going? This is the question that Wizard Tang asks himself and to which he tries to answer. His gaze as a photographer focuses on the Chinese urban middle class, in the current economic contexts and in those we can imagine in the near future. Wizard Tang bears witness to a population affected by consumerist bulimia, absorbed in a frenetic race to grab material goods, which swallows people up in mundane matters and anesthetizes them with respect to more urgent issues, such as social ones. It is possible that in the not too distant future the scenario will change, that the economy will slow down and demand will decrease: it would be a real blow for the Chinese middle class torn between the desire for high-end and international products and the real availability of a multitude of kitsch products at low cost. In his photographs Wizard Tang returns objects their power of attraction. Thus what is banal and seems obsolete becomes new, and finally the dynamic between the real and the imaginary is rebuilt on new balances.
