Dreams, Tarot and Poetry - an Homage to Niki de Saint Phalle

Dreams, Tarot and Poetry - an Homage to Niki de Saint Phalle
#Exhibitions

This is the first large retrospective in China which looks at, with historic and scientific rigour as well, the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, one of the rare female voices of the ‘60s, exponent of French Nouveau Realism. Perfectly aligned with the artistic poetics of Dadaism, Niki de Saint Phalle believed in the self-expression of the object, in net contrast with the self-expressiveness of man promoted, on the other hand, by Expressionism. It is within this conceptual framework that the artist gave life to her greatest work - the Garden of the Tarot, an actual park of dreams located in a small village in Tuscany, comprised of dreamlike installations, inspired by Gaudí’s Güell Park. For the exhibition, Today Art Museum is offering the Chinese public a tiny garden of wonders within the gallery itself and follows the time-line of the artistic life of Niki, with her experiments in the ‘60s, including paintings, sculptures, performance pieces and conceptual art. This is an artistic event of great importance, paying homage to a legendary woman who, with her courage and her transgressive style, turned the artistic and social rules of her times upside-down.
