In May of 2014, for its inauguration, the Red Brick Art Museum presented 10 internationally celebrated contemporary artists in the exhibition Tales from the Taiping Era. Two years earlier, in 2012, the institution finalised the purchase of Thousand-Armed Guanyin, a work created by Sino-French artist Huang Yong Ping inspired by Marcel Duchamp - the very first to become part of the museum’s collection. The piece is a reflection on the diverse and complex cultural context of the contemporary world and, at the same time, represents a temporal and spatial coordinate for contemporary art itself. In the following years, the piece shaped the values of the Red Brick Art Museum which, today, intends to celebrate its anniversary by retracing its own history with an exceptional collective exhibition. In the exhibition Thousand-Armed Guanyin, the works of seventeen artists, such as Olafur Eliasson, just to name one, are on display to celebrate a journey of artistic excellence. For the occasion, the archive and library, opened last year thanks to private donations from important artists, are also accessible to the public.
