When Painting Moves Beyond Reality

What remains of a painting when its subject is no longer the main focus? This is the idea behind What Remains, the exhibition in Beijing bringing together Rebecca Bernau and Clément Denis, two artists who, while following different paths, share a desire to move beyond the simple representation of reality. Rebecca Bernau begins with the human figure, yet her subjects are never traditional portraits. Bodies dissolve, overlap and re-emerge through layers of colour, becoming suspended presences that express emotion rather than identity. Clément Denis, by contrast, starts from the landscape. Forests, roads and rivers gradually lose their familiar outlines, transforming into pared-back compositions where light, colour and space create a new reality, poised between memory and imagination. Throughout the exhibition, figures and landscapes never disappear completely, but instead become the starting point for a visual experience that encourages visitors to slow down and look more closely. The result is a dialogue in which painting does not tell a story so much as evoke a feeling. It is an opportunity to discover how two emerging contemporary artists, through distinct visual languages, remind us that a painting can be deeply moving even without explaining everything.
