Lines of Flight is Shilpa Gupta’s first solo exhibition in West Asia. The exhibition features recent and older works and includes a new sound installation, site-specific interventions, sculptural objects, drawings, videos and prints. Shilpa Gupta’s artistic interests revolve around perception and the transmission of information in human life. Her work explores how objects, such as places, people and experiences, are defined and engages with the various dynamics that shape these definitions, including borders, labels, censorship and security. Over the course of two decades, Gupta has actively engaged with art in participatory, interactive and public settings. Her work examines the impact of social and psychological boundaries on public life, shedding light on the contradictions and conflicts within India’s emerging national public sphere. These include issues of gender and class, religious diversity, the influence of repressive state mechanisms, the allure of social conformity and the misleading notions of public consent facilitated by the evolving media landscape.
