#Art

Spread throughout the public spaces of Expo 2020, the Sabeel Fountains, a series of approximately 40 contemporary artistic interpretations of the traditional fountain of drinking water in the United Arab Emirates - the sabeel. The initiative is a collaboration between Expo 2020 and Art Jameel which began in 2019 with a design contest. Among the over 100 proposals reaching a jury of internationally famous figures, the winner was the creative studio Architecture + Other Things with the project Water in the Green, with the planning team made up of Faissal El-Malak and Alia Bin Omair, with Nahel. Both projects, connected by the sub-themes of Expo 2020, Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, combine elements of humanity, nature and technology. These beautiful fountains, also known as the Signature Fountains, have an innovative design, presenting themselves as functional yet artistic objects and aim at making visitors reflect on just how precious a vital resource like water is. To complete this initiative, two contemporary artists were invited, Nasir Nasrallah and Dana Awartani, who created the Artistic Fountains, respectively, Letter to Water and The Well. The fountains will have a lasting impact on the city, going beyond the closing of Expo 2020.
