For the First Time in a Long Time is the title of the exhibition, hosted by the Jameel Arts Centre of Dubai, which gathers the works of the last six years by artist Sarah Abu Abdallah. Born in 1990 in Saudi Arabia, where she lives and works, Sarah Abu Abdallah, with these works on display, explores the anxiety generated by our hyper-connectedness and the inherent tension between virtual experiences and physical experiences. Initially trained as a painter, she soon became fascinated with the language of film. Hers is a multi-media art, involving video, installations, conversations, images and poetry, all part of the same study of expressive means. An installation of real tomatoes, created the old-fashioned way, starts off a reflection on the consequences of the processes of modernisation. Meanwhile, in two videos, The Salad Zone (2013) and The House That Ate Them Whole (2018), as well as a large painting on fabric, created specifically for the exhibition, the artist refers in various ways to her daily life in order to open up a more ample dialogue on social norms.
