“For me, these artists capture something unique and interconnected in their take on our environment, both in how they respond to our surroundings, and how they connect to the art scene here.” - that’s how curator Maya Allison introduces the four artists whose work make up the collective exhibition Speculative Landscape organised by the New York University of Abu Dhabi and on display at the University Gallery until 7 December. The four young artists, Areej Kaoud, Ayman Zedani, Jumairy and Raja’a Khalid, all born in the Middle East and working in the United Arab Emirates, are a result of the times and their respective cultures, each of them offering an imaginary world into which the spectator is invited to descend. These worlds explore the concept of environment itself, whether it be natural, artificial or virtual, while raising questions related to the ideas of coexistence and sharing. Similar backgrounds, but diverse identities and personal stories that reflect the complexity of reality while strangely offering an organic collective view without losing individual distinction. Bringing them together, besides common roots, is a conceptual and philosophical approach, interdisciplinary practice, a desire to experiment and the creation of narratives that are both highly personal and collective at the same time.
