Metropolis - a City of Clay

Metropolis - a City of Clay
#Exhibitions

1000 clay sculptures brought together to compose a work of multiple objects of powerful visual impact. It is entitled Metropolis, a work by artist Lubna Chowdhary, visible until next August in the lobby of the Jameel Arts Centre of Dubai. Born in Tanzania to a family of Indian origins and raised in the United Kingdom, where she lives and works, Lubna Chowdhary creates sculptural objects and site-specific works, principally working with ceramics. To create the 1000 handmade sculptures that make up Metropolis, the artist spent 26 years, starting work in 1991 and continuing on the work over time, finally finishing in 2019. Chowdhary was inspired by horror vacui, that fear of the void that reminds us of Aristotle, but that can also be found in the art of the Middle East and Asia. She relied on memories of cities, real and imagined, creating recognisable objects, like towers and monuments, and others which are not so identifiable. Three-dimensional buildings create an urban landscape, both concrete and abstract.
