Reflections of Light

Reflections of Light
#Art

An abstract style, minimalist, colourful, an art which includes painting, architecture and sculpture, as well as a continued study with one simple element as its basis - light. Rana Begum, an artist from Bengal but based in London, is well-aware of how even quotidian urban materials, when removed from their typical uses, seen from different angles or simply touched by the right light, can become something else, acquiring real grace with their simplicity. Already, in 2006, Rana Begum began experimenting with reflectors. Ten years later, with the same theme, Begum created a 50-metre-long installation set in Lewis Cubitt Square in London. The results of this exploration are a series of works, now on display at the The Third Line Gallery in Dubai. Works on the walls and installations play with the contrast between the static nature of reflectors and the movement of light through them. And, once again, Begum assigns a central role to the spectator, because every work is perceived subjectively and in an infinite number of ways, changing according to the point of view from which it is seen and how the light strikes it. The apparent static nature, the repetitiveness of the lines, the order of the forms, reveal a potent dynamism which reminds one of the urban landscape and its complexity, an ongoing inspiration to Begum.
