Second Hand, Artistic Re-Working of Daily Objects

Second Hand, Artistic Re-Working of Daily Objects
#Exhibitions

Within the contemporary art of the Middle East, there are often echoes of conceptual art, that reflection on the shifting of sense that an artist can obtain by subtracting the common use of everyday objects and giving those same objects a totally new meaning. The accumulation, transformation, assembling and re-use of elements and materials from everyday life are also the basis of Second Hand, the first collective exhibition of the collection of Art Jameel. The title is a reference to Second Hand Information, a work from 2014, created by African artist Moffat Takadiwa by re-using the keys of a computer. Similarly, the other works on display incorporate pre-existing materials, transforming them or re-elaborating them, shifting their very purpose across time and space. Sculptures, installations, assemblages, designs, photos, paintings and performances created by 18 artists and collectives from around the globe are ready for visitors to explore. Works of art that seek to pose important questions regarding consumerism, inequality, post-colonialism and environmental issues. Highly varied works, united by a desire to question how we look at the material used to create art.
