Hussain AlMoosawi is a storyteller who likes to use images. Artist, photographer and designer, born in the United Arab Emirates and educated in Australia, AlMoosavi has always been interested in the rediscovery of the urban landscape of his own country, documenting it systematically but, often, using highly-overlooked visual elements. Driven by this passion, he has gone city by city, street by street, focusing on one element in particular - the facades of buildings. The exhibition Facade to Facade, offers the results of this work - a visual archive of the nation’s architecture which shows the significant changes, exceptionally rapid, which have occurred in the urban landscapes of the Emirates over the last decades. However, the 29 photos on display at the Gulf Photo Plus Gallery are not just a listing of differing styles. Besides being of indisputable historical value, they are also of notable artistic value. AlMoosawi, in fact, creates his photos by choosing a very precise point of view, removing the facades from their contexts, eliminating any external images, backgrounds - even the horizon. He forces the eye of the viewer to sync with the symmetry and repetition of form. He focuses his work on the patterns, rendering the buildings two-dimensional, thus making a mere process of cataloguing into a veritable art form.
