After having won the prize for best short film in 2018 at the Cinéma du Réel Festival in Paris with The White Elephant, the Palestinian artist, director and writer Shuruq Harb won the Han Nefkens Foundation - Fundació Antoni Tàpies Video Art Production prize with her new work, entitled The Jump. Being shown at the Jameel Arts Centre until 27 November, the film offers an intense reflection on “leaping into the void”, in both the literal and figurative senses, as an expression of cosmic freedom, physical thrills, suspension and even definitive ending. Set inside a tectonic fissure in the Valley of Jordan, narrated by a robotic voice which guides us through the dizzying shots of the landscape, The Jump is a critical look at contemporary existence, a poetic reflection on the production of images and how these are used in conflict zones. The film conducts the spectator in an other-worldly space, hypnotising, alienating and, at the same time, emotionally electrifying.
