A Large Exhibition to Re-Discover Berthe Morisot

Fifty years after the first large exhibition in the United Kingdom, Berthe Morisot is ready to light up the Spring at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Created in collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the exhibition of 2023 will reunite, in London, forty masterpieces from the Impressionist painter, highlighting her pioneering role within the movement. Known for her rapid glimpses of quotidian life and the intimacy of her interior scenes, Morisot still has many surprises to reveal. One of these is the connection with the French painting of 1700s, very much in fashion among the artists and collectors in Paris over the last decades of the XIX Century. In the London exhibition, twenty works by masters such as François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau are viewed along with the paintings of the protagonist, shedding light on her secret inspirations. Unique among her fellow countrymen, Morisot also expressed appreciation for England’s Thomas Gainsborough who will also be on hand. Bu the event at the Dulwich Picture Gallery will be, above all, an occasion to admire, in one location, some of the most beloved works of the Impressionist painter, appreciating their originality - from the Self-Portrait of 1885 to Julie Manet with Her Little Dog Laertes, from At the Dance to The Mirror of Psyche and Lady at Her Toilette, up to Eugéne Manet on the Isle of Wight, portrait of her husband Eugéne, brother of painter Edouard Manet, during their honeymoon in Great Britain.
