There’s urban poetry and the prison aesthetic, sign language, as well as a slice of a decisive period in recent American history, narrated through mutating urban landscapes and a stretch of hidden desires. Known for his extraordinary depiction of the social, sexual and political scenery of the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, Martin Wong distinguished himself as an important counter-current to the reactionary discourse of the artistic establishment of his times. From the 16th of June, the Camden Art Centre presents Martin Wong: Malicious Mischief, a gathering of over one-hundred works from the Chinese-American painter, a mix of social realism and visionary artistic styles. From the first paintings and sculptures created in the euphoric environs of San Francisco and Eureka in California, from between the end of the 1960s and the start of the 1970s, the itinerary guides the visitors to the iconic paintings of the 1980s and ‘90s by Wong, the result of his stay in a decrepit New York City.
