Hew Locke is a British contemporary sculptor and visual artist born in Edinburgh in 1959 and who has lived in Brixton, South London, for many years. Locke grew up in Guyana but has lived most of his adult life in the across the Channel capital. His art focuses on Britain’s historical interactions with Africa, India and the Caribbean, experiences that have had a significant impact on the history of his childhood home of Guyana. Using interventionist techniques, Locke reframes historical objects, from the earliest surviving drawings of American Aboriginals by a European artist to a Guyanese Akawaio feather headdress. The Watchers group of sculptural works form the centrepiece of the exhibition: figures that observe visitors from vantage points in the museum space.
