Clay has the power to evoke the union between the carnal and mystical dimensions, reality and imagination, moulding figures that plumb the intimacy of sentiments, connecting them to historic and cultural dimensions to express all the fragility and delicacy of human life. Similar to the handiworks of Pompei, from which she draws inspiration, fascinated by the mix of mineral, vegetable and animal elements of which they were originally composed, as well as the cultural function attributed to them before they were reduced to fragments, the ceramic works of Simone Fattal were created in 2021 by the Syrian artist raised in Lebanon at the Officine Gatti in Faenza. The creator of works rooted in a dimension between the contemporary and the ancient, universal and timeless, reproduces, using ceramics, the fixed images of Pompei, highlighting the coexistence of intense and reciprocal influences from a time when, in the city on the side of Vesuvius, “Egypt, but also Syria and Asia Minor were present… and, apparently, everybody lived together in harmony”. For her first monographic exhibition in Italy, from 8 September to 9 January at ICA, Fattal, more than a ruined city, evokes a melting pot of various Mediterranean cultures, coming together along with the ecosystem in which they lived, all to the exquisite wonder of our eyes.
