Towards the Essence of Painting - the Monochromes of Pino Pinelli
#Exhibitions

Take a painting, remove the subject (figurative art), its expressiveness (abstract art), the underlying meaning (conceptual art). What remains? That’s the question that, in the United States, set off the studies of Pino Pinelli who, along with his companions, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani tried every means to isolate the essence of painting. A special moment of this adventure returns to the fore in the exhibition Monocromo. Il Colore Come Destino e Come Profezia, just inaugurated at the Dep Art Gallery. Essential diptychs, triptychs, polyptychs capture the eye with the pure energy of the primary colours and the powerful contrasts between the complementary colours. An itinerary that seeks out all the potential of colour itself, stretches out along 13 works created between 1973 and 1976, in which Pinelli explores the pictorial surface for its “vibrato”, for the “state of anxiety” of the painting itself, of a depth to cross. These experiments were the prelude to the future frontier of analytical painting - a break with the painting as an entity defined by a canvas and a frame, its dissemination in fragments across the space of the wall itself, the new protagonist of an expanded pictorial approach.
