After having been at La Scala as a spectator to watch Verdi’s Macbeth in 1997, Woody Allen makes his directorial debut at La Scala, revisiting, from 6 to 19 July, his direction of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with scenery and costumes by Santo Loquasto. Created with performers from the Academy directed by Ádám Fischer, the production goes on stage along with a new staging of Prima la Musica e Poi le Parole by Antonio Salieri directed by Grischa Asagaroff. Performing both shows, along with the opera students, will be Ambrogio Maestri. From Manhattan - which cites Jupiter, Mozart’s last symphony, as one of the reasons for living - to Match Point - la the soundtrack of which is completely comprised of pieces sung by Enrico Caruso - the films of the American director are totally permeated by works of opera and symphonic music. At La Scala, Schicchi will be played by Ambrogio Maestri, one of the greatest baritones of our times, recently applauded at Piermarini for his portrayal of Falstaff under the direction of Zubin Mehta.
