Is it possible to tell humanity? Can time be told? The short century and the fast century. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries, seen through the lens of a camera, are the subject that this new exhibition in review at the Pompidou aims to tell. An ambitious, yet impossible theme that the French museum entrusts to 120 photographers and 500 photographs which are the result of the encounter between two important collections - that of the Center Pompidou itself and that of the collector and film mogul Marin Karmitz. The resulting exhibition goes beyond the classic study categories such as "portrait", "self-portrait", "nude" or even so-called "humanist" photography. It reveals peculiarities, “photographic” ways of seeing and makes visible correspondences between artists that are in many ways unforseen, unexpected.
