Gerhard Richter returns to Italy and exhibits in a gallery after more than forty years. He does so in Rome, at the Gagosian with the project Moving Picture (946-3) Kyoto Version (2019-24), an immersive and experiential installation that mixes film and sound. It is the combination of a feature film made in collaboration with Corinna Belz, projected on a monumental scale, which extends for over 7 meters in width, and a score for trumpet composed by Rebecca Saunders. Ten speakers surround the viewer, giving physical strength and presence to the music. The overall result is a work of light, which illuminates the infinite beauty of chance. However, it is not the first time that Richter combines images and sounds in immersive experiences giving life to temporary works. It happened at the Manchester International Festival in 2015 and four years later at The Shed in New York.
